Van Don International Airport, passenger experience as the heart of airport operations

On December 30, 2018 Vietnam celebrated the opening of Van Don International Airport, the first public, privately developed, constructed and operated airport in the country. The new airport is part of the large scale urban and economic development of Quang Ninh province, famous for the UNESCO World Heritage Site Halong Bay located nearby. A multidisciplinary on-site team of NACO, part of Royal HaskoningDHV, supported their client Sun Group with finalising construction works and establishing airport operations.

For 14 months, NACO’s on-site team consulted Sun Group on project management (contract management, scheduling, procurement) design optimisations (including masterplan, terminal building, ATC-tower and special airport systems) and operations (training of staff, sales & marketing, operational readiness).

Van Don International Airport is Vietnam’s most modern airport and aims, true to the tradition of Vietnam’s hospitality, to make passenger experience the heart of the airport’s operations. On top of the nature-inclusive architecture and the resort-like terminal building, it is equipped with the latest systems and equipment to make the building future proof and to minimize common discomforts of air travel for the passengers. With a daily capacity of 7,000 passengers, it will become a convenient node within the network of airports in South East Asia, catalysing the economic development of the region.

Innovative security screening
Sun Group’s Vice Chairman Mr. Dang Minh Truong says: “Convenience for the passenger is our driving force. Working with NACO as our airport consultant has for example resulted in using the latest innovations in security screening, giving the passenger more time to relax. Moreover, they advised us on how we, as a greenfield airport, can expand our operations in a controlled and safe way over the next few years. Van Don is ready for the future.”

Romy Berntsen, Project Manager and architect at NACO: “We are delighted that Van Don International Airport is now officially open, and we are proud to have contributed to this project with our very broad and diverse expertise on airports. This milestone will boost tourism and commerce to this area significantly and this will benefit the local economy, providing jobs and new business opportunities for the people living in Quang Ninh province.“
